This one is very similar to the first one that he ever built, and uses a snare drum head. The first one had a pig bladder skin, which was fragile and was broken on a tour. It was later given to the Old Town School of Folk Music and was displayed there in a glass case. The case later fell over and destroyed the banjo. Clarke says someone else made one to replace it.
